SELENA DARIA VLAD – ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA

On May 5, Selena finished the first cytostatics therapy and we had one week break time, which we spent at home.
Now we are back to Fundeni Hospital for another month for the next chemotherapy stage. On the day before departure, Selena was agitated, she cried a lot and when grandma told her that she would go for a walk in the park with mummy and daddy, she said that she doesn’t want that, that she will fly to Germany. Actually we were all tensioned and I think she sensed that.
She watched the TV program “Poveştiri Adevărate” and said that she liked this movie with her best and that I should call them to ask to have it broadcast more often. Later on, at B1 TV she asked: “why is this movie not colored? Did they not have painting colors to use?” The painting colors are her latest discovery.
While we stayed at home, she learned to walk, but mostly we kept her in the wheelchair, because the leg swells and it hurts and her state is quite weak. We had to cut her hair down entirely, because she began losing it. We were all in deep pain and she asked to wear a bandana. Now she is more accustomed to it and when she saw that I had tied my hair with a colored piece of elastic she asked: “Mummy is that my hair when I was little and I had hair and now I gave it to you because I don’t have any?”
She understands everything, I’m convinced of it.
May Lord give her power to cope with therapy and be cured. Lately, she could not eat because of the small lesions and injuries in the mouth. It is painful and terribly difficult not to have any power, but there will be a miracle and Selena will be cured. She MUST. We have new friends with us, extraordinary people, for whom it was enough to look in her eyes for a second. Words are to shallow to express our thanks for what you are doing. I pray for all of you, so that nobody passes through such terrible suffering.
The day she was born, I remember the moon was on the sky during the day and so we decided to call her Selena. Her first sound was not the cry, but she sneezed and everybody in the delivery room said that she will be lucky, I remember as if it were yesterday. Selena is lucky that she has all us and all of you who became part of our lives.
I want to believe that everything will be all right in the end. I cannot look at her with other thoughts. It is impossible for me! When we return from Germany, you will see a merry and healthy little girl, and, I cannot seize thinking of it, unfortunately too mature for her age. We had to eliminate sweets from her food and the Kinder Egg magic has ended. She insisted like two days to have the Kinder Egg, but now she doesn’t even mention them. The same thing she did in the hospital when after crying and praying to go home, she eventually gave up and never pronounced that word until she saw we entered on our street, when we returned from the first treatment session.
The 5 days passed so quickly, she didn’t get the chance to enjoy them, and here we are back at the hospital again. I wonder what she feels. Often she starts to cry and when I ask her what’s wrong she answers: “I just want to cry”. This breaks my heart and the way she leans against my shoulder. All I can do is caress her and pray that she feels serene.
Selena is very courageous and quiet in her disease and the pain of being far from everything that is dear to her. She hopes that we will go to Germany on a vacation and we will be cured. God help us!
